Lawmaker seeks to establish term limits in Erie County

An Erie County lawmaker is seeking term limits for local elected officials.

Legislator John Bargnesi introduced a bill that would set term limits in Erie County.

If enacted, Erie County legislators, along with the county executive, comptroller, sheriff, clerk and district attorney, would only be allowed to serve three four-year terms.

“Term limits provide new opportunities for people to serve in local government,” Bargnesi said. “New members of government enable new ideas, encourage new perspectives and promote accountability. This is a common sense measure that will promote dynamic and responsive government. ”

The bill now goes to the county legislature for consideration.

Bargnesi wants the three-term limit to begin with the 2030 election cycle.
