Warriors’ Klay Thompson to test free agency, should Houston Rockets pursue it?

The NBA world received some major news on Monday. After some time of speculation, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Golden State Warriors guard Klay Thompson is set to test free agency and seek deals this offseason.

Could the Houston Rockets find ways to pursue Thompson this offseason? After a 41-41 season, the Rockets could revamp their roster and make another strong push toward the playoffs.

“For the first time in his career, Klay Thompson, I’m told, is open to all external options in upcoming free agency,” Charania said Monday.Run it backwards. “He intends to test free agency. We know the Warriors want him back. They offered him an extension before the season started, they’re going to see if there can be a deal, but he will be there on the market.

Pursuing Thompson could prove tricky for Rockets general manager Rafael Stone, and things are expected to go the team’s way. Thompson still averaged 17.9 points per game while shooting 39 percent from beyond the arc, despite the 34-year-old declining and getting closer to the end of his NBA career.

Thompson did not agree to a two-year contract extension before the season, which would have added to his five-year contract, which expires this summer. Now, the Golden State Warriors guard will be looking for a salary this offseason, probably the last real one of his career.

Obviously, the Rockets can’t compete with a franchise like the Orlando Magic and what they can offer in terms of salary this offseason. However, his floor spacing would be extremely valuable for a team that struggled in that department a season ago.

If Thompson doesn’t get his desired salary this offseason and the market declines for him, Stone and the Rockets could try to persuade him to join Houston on a discounted contract, perhaps even a “proof” season for the 34 year old player. .
