City of Atlanta now offering rebates of up to ,000 for a new electric bike

ATLANTAStarting Sunday, anyone residing in the city of Atlanta can apply for discounts to purchase a new e-bike.

“We want people to see e-bikes as fun and functional,” said Jeremiah Jones of PropelATL.

That’s why PropelATL worked with Atlanta City Council Member Matt Westmoreland to launch the city’s first e-bike rebate program.

“I was in Denver. Denver has an e-bike rebate program, and I figured why not Atlanta,” Jones said.

The city invested $1 million in the program, managed by the Atlanta Regional Commission. Anyone can apply for free money.

Seventy-five percent of the rebates will be reserved for Atlanta residents earning less than about $54,000 a year. These discounts range from $1,500 for a standard e-bike to $2,000 for a larger cargo bike capable of carrying items or another passenger.

Other residents can still get $500 for a standard e-bike and $1,000 for a cargo bike.

“Right now it’s only for residents of the city of Atlanta and that’s because the city of Atlanta donated the million dollars, but we are currently seeking federal grants in hopes of being able to bring them to the area,” Jones said.

Winners will have the choice of 12 sellers in the city to purchase their bikes. The bikes can travel more than 20 miles per hour and some have a range of 50 miles.

“Eighty percent of our trips are within a 3 to 5 mile radius of our home, and so if we can switch from car to bike, just think about what we’re doing for the environment and for our own health,” Jones said.

“Having multiple options within a family in a home is a good thing,” he added.

The lottery window is open until June 23. Jones said there will be at least two more later this year to ensure all funds get into the hands of enthusiastic runners.

The application is open on the Atlanta Regional Commission website.
