Buffalo opens cooling centers, extends wading pool hours

Ten cooling centers will open across the city of Buffalo starting Monday to relieve this week’s extreme heat, Mayor Byron R. Brown announced.

The hours of the city’s 10 water games are also extended. They will be open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., along with two indoor pools – Cazenovia Pool, 626 Abbott Road, and Lovejoy Pool, 1171 E. Lovejoy St.

Students in Buffalo’s early childhood, elementary and middle school classes will benefit from half-day sessions all week, Buffalo Public Schools officials announced. Students will be released 3.5 hours earlier than usual and lunches will be served before their departure.

High school students will sit for their state exams as scheduled. Schools will be closed on Wednesday for the June 16 vacation.

Outdoor pools will also open this week in Kenmore and the town of Tonawanda, town officials said.

Lincoln Pool, 1200 Parker Blvd., will be open noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday. Kenmore Pool, 255 Mang Ave., and Mang Pool, 425 Mang Ave., will be open 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. City of Tonawanda cooling center locations and schedules will be announced.

The National Weather Service says temperatures are expected to rise to near 90 degrees or higher in the coming week, accompanied by high humidity.
