Luis Contreras recalled from Triple-A

The Astros added a new bullpen arm Sunday, calling up right-hander Luis Contreras from Triple-A Sugar Land.

Contreras was 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA in 19 appearances in Sugar Land, with 20 strikeouts in 19⅓ innings. The Astros signed the 28-year-old Venezuelan during the offseason. He pitched four seasons in Milwaukee’s system over the previous four years and has yet to make his major league debut.

“A strike thrower. He can give you multiple innings,” Astros manager Joe Espada said of Contreras. “He’s going to be in the zone; he will attack the area. Great makeup artist, tough. We are delighted to have it.

To make room for Contreras on the 40-man roster, right-hander Cristian Javier was moved to the 60-day injured list. He is out for the season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
