Buffalo schools move to half days in anticipation of heat

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) – In anticipation of extreme heat forecasts for the Buffalo-Niagara area for the coming week, Buffalo Public Schools is moving to half days in class.

“In anticipation of this and out of great concern for students, Buffalo Public Schools has decided to implement four half days next week for students in all levels of early childhood, elementary and middle school (from K-8) Monday, June 17, Tuesday, June 18, Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21,” a statement from the district said.

Lunch will be served to all students before their departure. Students will be released three and a half hours earlier (10:55 a.m., 11:45 a.m. and 12:35 p.m.) than their usual dismissal times.

High school students will not be in school Monday due to the New York State Regents Exams. However, high school students will be required to take their regular NYS Regents exams during the remainder of the week. Water stations will be available for students taking Regents exams.

Staff will remain at their assigned locations for full work days next week.
