As Atlanta experiences dangerous heat wave, doctor tells Channel 2 how it’s affecting air quality – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — Heat has a big impact on the quality of the air you breathe. Currently, the Atlanta metro area is under a “Code Orange” air alert, meaning that if you have respiratory problems, you may need to limit the amount of time you can be outdoors.

Jorge Estevez from Canal 2 I spoke to a doctor about the effects air quality can have on your health.

“You know, it’s the particles in the air,” said Dr. Jayne Morgan, executive director of health and community education at Piedmont Hospital. “These are very small fine particles that float in the air and are even more suspended on hot days. And the finer these particles are, the smaller they are, the deeper they can penetrate into the lungs when we breathe, and then even enter the bloodstream and cause medical problems.

Morgan said Channel 2 Action News This problem affects many people, not just young and old.

“Just young people and older people with respiratory issues, people with heart issues, those are all people to be concerned about, (when) we have this orange alert level,” Morgan said.

She said people, even those not at higher risk from air quality, should limit their time outdoors during high heat and lower air quality.

“You should definitely limit any real exertion outside, especially if you have breathing or heart problems, whether you’re a young child or an elderly person,” Morgan said.
