Houston Astros make surprise move, cut Abreu

The Houston Astros’ relationship with Jose Abreu has been complicated since he joined the team last offseason with a then-franchise-record $58.5 million contract for a free agent.

His tenure with the Astros was marred by difficulties as he posted his career-worst numbers in 2023, and followed with an even worse performance that led to him being sent to their Florida complex to work on his swing .

After about a month, they called him up and wanted to see if he could make an impact on this team.

Houston apparently has its answer Chandler Rome Athleticism reported they decided to release Abreu.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passanthis move won’t come cheap as he will still be owed more than $30 million after the end of his initial three-year contract.

While it may hurt financially, it may be what helps the Astros make a run and get back into playoff position.

No corresponding move has been announced yet, but it seems like it’s possible they recall star prospect Joey Loperfido, who was recently demoted as part of a slew of roster moves.
