Houston Astros Orbit named 2024 Mascot Hall of Fame inductee; Indiana induction planned for summer

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Cooperstown rejected Billy Wagner, Astros legend this year, and this season’s Houston team isn’t exactly Hall of Fame worthy so far.

But at least we have Orbit.

The ball club’s anthropomorphic green alien, known for teasing the opposing dugout without saying anything, has become an inductee into the Mascot Hall of Fame.

According to the venue, a vote of 90,000 fans admitted Orbit – who may or may not have an evil twin named Comet – to the illustrious venue in Whiting, Indiana.

Orbit will enter with Lou Seal, the marine troublemaker of the San Francisco Giants, Monte the Grizzly Bear of the University of Montana and Jaxson de Ville of the Jacksonville Jaguars, whose portraitist wore only body paint, a Speedo and the jaguar head.

Orbit becomes one of eight Major League Baseball mascots in the room and the second from Houston. The Rockets Grip the Bear was inducted in 2006.

Like many of your favorite film and television franchises, Orbit is a reboot of the alien of the same name that existed at the Astrodome from 1990 to 1999.

The team’s move to Union Station’s Minute Maid Park in 2000 gave way to the introduction of Junction Jack, a Jackrabbit locomotive driver who existed until 2012.

As the team changed ownership, leagues, divisions, colors and logo, Orbit had another look, being reborn on November 2, 2012, according to the Mascot Hall of Fame.

Orbit’s antics, always done with a smile, included a feud with former MLB pitcher Chris Archer. Orbit once tried to pass off a laxative like “electrolyte formula” as a peace offering.
