11 Ways to Celebrate Juneteenth in Houston

To commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth, several events are planned in June. This is not an exhaustive list of events.

1. Juneteenth celebration

A nonprofit group organized by Missouri City Councilman Don Smith celebrates the June 19, 1865, announcement of freedom to the 250,000 enslaved Black Americans in Galveston Bay with a two-day music festival in Hunters Glen Park. Featured artists include musicians Triple Threat, Alexander O’Neal and Step Rideau and the Zydeco Outlaws.

2. Celebration of June Seventeenth

The BLCK Market on Main Street is hosting its fifth annual Juneteenth celebration to honor the freedom of enslaved Black Americans and their culture. The three-day event features live music, soul food, barbecues, vendors showcasing art and fashion, and games and activities for the whole family. The first 250 guests will be admitted free.

3. 2nd Annual Freedom Walk and Run

The second annual Freedom Walk & Run event will take place at Emancipation Park to create a positive impact on the lives of the community. Although registration is free, proceeds from the event will benefit the park’s programming initiatives.

4. Houston Black Bus Tour

A guided bus tour will take participants through historic African American communities in and around Houston. Due to limited places, it is recommended to register before the event.

5. Juneteenth at Olivewood Cemetery

The walking tour, hosted by Olivewood Cemetery, will allow visitors to celebrate and learn about Houston’s first African American community. The cemetery, established in 1875, is the burial site of prominent members of the African-American community such as Richard Allen, Frank Vance and Lucy Farrow.

6. June 17th cultural festival

At the weekend event hosted by Houston First Corp., people will be able to celebrate the historical significance and culture of Juneteenth. The event will feature live music, art, Black-owned businesses, child-friendly activities and food vendors, according to a press release.

7. Juneteenth Jubilee

The community of Siena will host this festival of music, gastronomy and family in its Club Sienna amphitheater. The group Such and Such will perform R&B, Motown and old school hits; artist Ange will present a live speed painting performance; and local vendors will offer handmade products.

8. Celebration of June Seventeenth

In Tamina, the event will feature Marti Corn, who wrote “The Ground I Stand on: Tamina, a Town of Freedmen.” The event will also include a panel discussion, children’s activities and food.

9. Boat Party Cruise on June 17

This second annual Juneteenth celebration, hosted at the South Shore Resort and Conference Center, includes a three-hour cruise along the Gulf Coast, a live music broadcast from Power Moves Internet Radio, a buffet with food and unlimited drinks. , and prize gifts. Only 75 tickets are available and parking is free with the purchase of a ticket. Participants must be 21 years or older.

10. Juneteenth: an elevated bounce experience

In Freedmen’s Town, this is a festive educational event to commemorate Juneteenth. This event will feature live music, educational activities, an art exhibit and food.

11. Juneteenth Cultural Arts Festival

In partnership with HEB, Acres Homes will host the fourth annual Cultural Arts Festival. The event is family friendly and will feature vendors, food trucks and activities. In addition to that, there will be live performances from the Bayou City Brass Band, Keyun & The Zydeco Masters, The Keeshea Pratt Band and AJ McQueen, according to the website.
