4 players on the Buffalo Bills defense who need a solid minicamp

Mandatory minicamp for the Buffalo Bills begins June 11 and there are some fascinating things to look for. Specifically on the defensive side of the ball, and which players will be starters for this team, or players who could experience a resurgence in their career. Let’s see which of these players need a solid minicamp.

Cole Bishop enters this season as a rookie at safety. A room that has been manned by two phenomenal starters since 2017. Now, the path that will allow Bishop to possibly become one of the starters of the future starting this year is not as set in stone as one might think. ‘imagine.

This offseason, the Bills extended Taylor Rapp, who already has one year in this system, and they signed Mike Edwards who previously played for the Kansas City Chiefs. With Rapp’s familiarity in this system and Edwards being a solid veteran, it makes Bishop’s path even more difficult. If he wants to be on the field in week one, he’ll have to make his mark starting with mandatory minicamp.

Carter also comes in as a rookie, but besides the two best players at his position (Ed Oliver, DaQuan Jones), he has a real chance to be the third defensive lineman in the rotation. Granted, the Bills didn’t sign Austin Johnson for depth behind a rookie, but that could happen if Carter makes this coaching staff difficult to choose.

He wasn’t a three-time captain at Duke for nothing, and with his potential based on his college film, he could be a force in this league. But right now, he’s just a rookie who has to prove it first, and it all starts with minicamp.

The first player on this list who isn’t a rookie, and he’s arguably the one who needs to show off the most. Kaiir Elam has a lot to prove to this staff and to himself. He was a 2022 first-round pick and hasn’t shown much in the NFL yet.

It’s very much like a roller coaster ride where he gives up big plays, then he makes a big play. All in the same game, or in the case of the Bills’ last Wild Card Round against the Steelers, all in a few plays! With the removal of longtime defensive backs coach John Butler and the hiring of Jahmile Addae for the same role, this could be his chance. All he has to do is put it together this year, starting with minicamp.

The perennial Hall of Fame defensive player, who won two Super Bowl rings with two different teams, has something to prove for the Buffalo Bills. Von Miller is coming off his worst season to date, but last season he was also coming back from a season-ending injury he suffered in 2022.

He showed flashes at the end of the 2023 season of the old Von who was a key contributor during this 2022 season for the Bills before the ACL injury. He needs to prove in this minicamp that he can be a solid starter for the Bills in the 2024 season. This could mean a lot for him at the end of his career, having a much bigger impact this season and regardless of the number of seasons left in the tank.
