LOGAN COUNTY, Ohio – At least 43 horses were killed when a barn caught fire in Logan County Saturday afternoon, Richland Township Assistant Fire Chief Jason Johns said.

At around 12:15 p.m., firefighters were called to Brant Performance Horses on State Route 638 in Belle Center for a fire. When crews arrived, they saw a 5,575-square-foot barn completely engulfed in flames, CBS station WHIO reports.

Several fire brigades from the surrounding area were called to assist in fighting the fire.

“The whole building was not safe to enter. There are living quarters in there. They had a riding arena inside, and everything was completely compromised… We couldn’t get in,” Johns told WHIO.

According to Johns, 43 horses had been killed by Saturday evening, but that number may change as the recovery efforts continue.

One person was injured and taken to a local hospital for treatment. They were later transferred to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Their condition is currently unknown.

According to Johns, the barn was declared a total loss.

The cause of the fire is unclear.
