Elderly Texas Couple Receives Lawn Maintenance for a Year

The Williamses, now in their 80s, received a donation through a church partnership.

HOUSTON — Lawn maintenance for next year will be covered for an elderly couple in northeast Houston.

The Williamses, now in their eighties, can no longer get around like they used to. However, Williams said a big burden has now been eased through a partnership between Lighthouse Church and Ax Lawn Services.

Mrs. Zelma Williams and her daughter watch a transformation in progress.

“I’ve just been in seventh heaven,” Williams said.

Williams and her husband Roosevelt have lived in their northeast Houston home since 1982. For a time, they were able to handle it all on their own. Now that has changed.

“I like to see things grow. I like to see things grow,” Williams said.

Just around Mother’s Day, the Williamses found out they would receive this blessing.

Lighthouse Church has partnered with Ax Lawn Services to donate yard renovations, which include remodeling the lawn and developing new landscaping. All this while adding a little color to a lawn care service for a year.

“We’re all family. We’re a community and we just want to help each other,” said Andres Cabrera, owner of Ax Lawn Services.

Denitra Vidrine, Williams’ daughter, made a prayer request. She realized at age 80 that her parents’ bodies couldn’t really do this job.

“Give back to our community and make a real, tangible impact, not only spiritually in the sanctuary on Sundays, but in people’s homes and daily lives,” said Brian Smith, communications manager for Lighthouse Church.

The Williamses are grateful to be able to watch the flowers bloom.

“It’s going to take a huge burden off my shoulders. Not a little bit. A mega burden, and I can sit back and watch things grow,” Williams said.
