9 dogs rescued after kitten fires at Houston-area home

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KIAH) — It’s a horrific story of pain and suffering for a helpless animal. Today, an investigation was launched after deputies said a 6-week-old kitten was set on fire at a home in North Harris County. Officials with Alan Rosen’s Harris County District 1 office said witnesses told them a kitten was deliberately set on fire by at least two juveniles.

It happened in the 12600 block of Drifting Winds Road in northeast Harris County. Authorities said surveillance video showed the kitten running away while she was covered in flames. The cat was rushed by the Houston SPCA to a local veterinary hospital. But due to the severity of its burns and injuries, the kitten had to be euthanized.

Deputies say neighbors and witnesses first called 911 around 3 a.m. Constable Alan Rosen’s animal cruelty investigators were called to the scene along with the Houston SPCA and both learned the suspects were living in a home where other animals were allegedly present.

Out of concern for the safety of other animals, a warrant has been issued for the seizure of any animals found on this property. The mandate was granted. Nine animals were located Thursday afternoon in the backyard of the residence. They were all in poor condition, malnourished and found locked in dirty cages, without access to water or food. Houston SPCA takes care of animals.

Once the investigation is complete, it will be forwarded to the Harris County District Attorney’s Office for possible charges.
