Houston ISD Superintendent Mike Miles talks about STAAR’s performance on the last day of school

HOUSTON – It’s the last day of the school year for Houston ISD students.

Superintendent Mike Miles will provide an overview of how high school students performed this year on state-mandated tests at 4:30 p.m.

We will broadcast this press conference live right here.

The administration said in advance that Miles would also answer any other questions, but he said at the top of his news conference that he would ask more questions until next week.

This school year is ending with a lot of emotion with recent job cuts and many teachers and principals finding that they will not return next year because their contracts are not renewed.

Miles and the school board also have two big financial decisions ahead of them.

First, finalize a budget and close the $528 million gap, which is why Miles said they made cuts in every department while trying to keep the cuts as far away from students as possible. The superintendent promised at a news conference last month that no teacher or principal positions were being eliminated; they will all be replaced by new educators with a “continuous improvement” mindset.

The new financial year begins July 1.

Second, there’s the $4.5 billion bond proposal that Miles and the school board want to present to voters in November. The public has another opportunity to provide feedback on Monday, June 10 from 6-8 p.m. at Forest Brook Middle School.
