NFL salary cap expert sees Buffalo Bills as active spenders in 2025

Sacrifice now and spend big later. The Buffalo Bills made several difficult personnel decisions this offseason aimed at freeing up salary cap space long-term.

The result was the departures of accomplished veterans Jordan Poyer, Mitch Morse and Tre’Davious White, among others. Then, Buffalo took a very heavy dose of medicine by trading WR1 Stefon Diggs, eating up $31 million in cap space this season before going off the books in 2025.

Buffalo also created cap space by restructuring quarterback Josh Allen’s deal and extending left tackle Dion Dawkins.

“They’ve really come through every level over the last 18 months,” said Spotrac’s Mike Ginnitti, who is fluent in the NFL salary cap. “They’re well organized, even just the projected starting lineup. There aren’t a lot of one-year deals in that (starting group). They’ve done a good job adding depth through the draft that , I think, can really do some competitions this offseason.

Ginnitti delivered his informed analysis during an appearance on Jeremy and Joe Show from WGR Radio earlier this week.

“It kind of makes the league talk with the amount of turnover and restructuring and acquisitions, how predominant Buffalo has been in the news. They’re probably slowing down their pace a little, but look, we know what’s coming. It’s the calm before the storm,” Ginnitti said. “I think they’ll be one of the most active teams in 2025 in terms of free agency.”

A number of well-known names are expected to become free agents in 2025. Receivers Tee Higgins, Chris Godwin, Keenan Allen and Amari Cooper will likely be available. Now, on defense, Edge Rushers Khalil Mack and Matthew Judon will see their contracts expire after the 2024 campaign.
