Porsche-driving Indian teenager who killed two people must write essay

An Indian court granted bail to a drunken teenager who drove his Porsche into a motorcycle, killing two people, on the condition that he write “an essay” about the incident.

The court also ordered the 17-year-old boy from Pune in the western state of Maharashtra to undergo treatment for his alcohol addiction, attend counselling sessions and cooperate with local police for 15 days.

The teenager, whose name was not disclosed, is the son of a prominent real estate magnate, and the judge’s perceived leniency has sparked outrage across the country.

The accident occurred at around 3:15 am on Sunday in Kalyani Nagar in Pune.

A group of friends were returning home on motorcycles after a party at a local restaurant. As they reached the Kalyani Nagar junction, one of their motorcycles was hit by the teenager’s Porsche, causing the two occupants to fall and die instantly, according to police.

After hitting the drivers, the teenager crashed his car into a railing, police said.

A video widely shared on social media shows a group of bystanders attacking the driver as he tries to get out of the vehicle.

The deceased are software engineers Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, both 25.

The driver was charged with reckless driving, causing death by a reckless or negligent act not amounting to intentional homicide, and endangering the life or personal safety of any person.

The accused is reportedly four months away from his 18th birthday, the legal driving age in India.

He was reportedly out to celebrate the results of his Grade 12 final exam.

He was driving at 200 km/h when he collided with the motorcycle.

The boy’s lawyer Prashant Patil said, “The juvenile accused, who was arrested by the Pune police, has been granted bail by the Juvenile Justice Authority on certain conditions. Among other things, the accused will have to cooperate with the Yerawada traffic police for 15 days, write an essay on the accident, seek treatment from a competent doctor to stop drinking, seek psychiatric counselling and submit a report.”

Police said they would appeal the bail order and treat the defendant as an adult.

“We will leave no stone unturned to prove that this is a heinous crime,” said Pune police chief Amitesh Kumar India today.

Police also arrested the boy’s father and the owners of the two bars where he was allegedly served alcohol.

The legal drinking age in Maharashtra is 25 years.

“We are in shock,” Jugal Kishor Koshta, an uncle of one of the victims, told NDTV. “It is reprehensible that he is being released on bail within 15 hours. He and his parents should be investigated. We will discuss the matter once Ashwini’s last rites are over tomorrow.”

“We want his bail to be revoked and he to remain in police custody. Because of him, an innocent girl who had never seen life died,” said Sachin Bokde, another uncle of the victim.

Sanjay Raut, a prominent member of the opposition Shiv Sena party in Maharashtra, accused the Pune police of serving pizza and burgers to the accused teenager after the accident. India today reported.

“The police commissioner should be suspended. He tried to protect the accused. A young couple was killed and the accused was released on bail within two hours,” he told news agency ANI.

“In the video, it is seen that he was drunk, but his medical report was negative. Who is helping the accused? Who is this police commissioner? He should be removed, otherwise the people of Pune will take to the streets.”
