First look at wrestler-turned-Buffalo Bill Gable Steveson

Last week the Buffalo Bills took a chance on a guy who will either make them look very smart or very stupid.

The Buffalo Bills have recruited a proven champion. He is already an Olympic gold medalist. He knows how to win. However, it is an approach that already makes a lot of people laugh.

Why are they laughing? Well, the guy they signed never played organized football in his life. He went from a career as an Olympic and WWE wrestler to donning a helmet and cleats for the first time as a professional football player.

However, it’s a move that could be the biggest deal for the Bills. He definitely has the size of an NFL player. At 6’1″ and 275 pounds, he is about the same height as Bills standout defensive lineman Ed Oliver. Those who have watched football know that Ed defends very well.

So what makes him think he can make the transition to football after never playing a single game on an organized team? He says he’s a sponge. He enjoys soaking up as much knowledge as possible and then trying to perfect those techniques.

This is something he obviously jumped at the chance to do today. Coach McDermott would spend a little extra time after everyone else went into the locker room to expand a little on what they were teaching using wrestling as a translator. McDermott was once a champion wrestler himself.

You could see him showing Steveson a little bit about how to use his wrestling skills to be successful on the defensive line as well.

He certainly seems to have the athletic chops. The only question is whether or not he will be able to develop the technique needed to earn a spot on this team.
