Houston Texans player Tank Dell says he was in ‘wrong place’ during April Florida shooting that left 9 injured

Houston Texans wide receiver Tank Dell publicly discussed the night he was shot in April for the first time and said it was a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The video above is from a previous ABC13 report on Tank Dell’s injury.

Dell made his comments on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast, where he appeared with teammate CJ Stroud, in an episode released this week.

Dell was injured at a private event in Sanford, Florida, on April 28, where 10 people were injured by gunfire. Dell suffered a minor injury and has since returned to practice in OTAs for the Texans.

“First of all, I’m lucky, you know. For me, it was just the wrong place, wrong time,” Dell, a Daytona Beach, Fla., native, said on the podcast. “I went back to my mom, I wasn’t even planning on going to the little pool party or anything, but my boys saw I was at home, so they hit me and They told me, ‘Stop by the party.’ They told me there would be security checks, people would be checked at the door, stuff like that, so I was like, “Alright, cool. It’s a good atmosphere, and there were a lot of people I know in there, so it was cool. “And then it came out of nowhere. It went south out of nowhere. »

Police released video showing Dell caught in the middle of the altercation as shots were fired. A 16-year-old suspect has been charged with attempted homicide, shooting a firearm in a public place, using a firearm during a crime and illegal possession of a firearm by a minor.

“.I thought I had removed myself from the situation,” Dell said. “When you see on the video, when I came across them, I thought I was getting away from the little situation of the altercation where they were fighting, but I put myself in the middle of two people, and it became mad.”

Stroud said he was attending a playoff game between the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers when he learned from the Texans that Dell had been shot and called the situation “eye-opening.”

“All I read was ‘Tank got shot’ and I just dropped my phone, started crying man. You know when you hear that you start thinking at worst,” he said on the podcast.

He said that “it was a good moment for me to realize that I couldn’t go home and do the same things that I was doing too.”

“Because sometimes I go home, that’s where I feel comfortable, going to pool parties, going bowling, like to the skating rink, house parties, like, this are the people I grew up with, I’m not change because I made a little money,” he said. “But for this moment to happen so quickly, it was like an eye-opening experience, not only for Tank but for the rest of the world and athletes around the world.”

Dell’s rookie season ended in early December when he broke his leg in a game against the Denver Broncos. He had 709 receiving yards at the time of his injury and was on pace for 1,205 yards.
