While singing a flawless version of the national anthem, Brandy also managed to pay tribute in style to her idol Whitney Houston during the NFC Championship Game at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

The 42-year-old Grammy-winning singer delivered a stunning rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” ahead of Sunday’s game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers.

Over the years, Brandy expressed her admiration for Houston, who tragically died in 2012 at the age of 48.

The “Boy Is Mine” singer previously collaborated with his idol on the 1997 musical Cinderella by Rodgers & Hammersteinin which Brandy played the title role, while Houston co-produced and starred as the Fairy Godmother.

โ€œMy childhood dreams were to be a singer, to reach as many people as possible and to meet Whitney Houston, just to meet her,โ€ Brandy told PEOPLE in August 2020.

โ€œSo meeting her and spending time with her and singing with her,โ€ she added, โ€œwas incredible. For her to give me such a role, the first black princess, I don’t know the words to really describe what it’s like.”

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2021, Brandy fondly recalled that the experience “was a collaborative thing, and what I loved about working with her was that I was allowed to contribute, I had the right to be myself.โ€ She added: โ€œAnd then I was allowed to get all the advice I could imbibe from her.โ€

Brandy continued, “We had some beautiful and fun times that I will remember forever. She is truly my angel and I am so grateful for this opportunity.”
