Atlanta boil water map shows area affected by state of emergency declaration

City officials declared a state of emergency in Atlanta Saturday evening after two water main breaks the day before left parts of the state capital without water and under boil water advisories.

According to the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management (DWM), the breaks occurred Friday in downtown and Midtown Atlanta on a 48- and 36-inch transmission line “that carries large volumes of water to the metropolitan area.

Crews worked through the night to repair the breaks, according to the department, and by Saturday evening, repairs to the main water break were complete, although the boil water advisory remained in effect.

News week contacted DWM Atlanta for additional information via email Sunday morning.

Residents and property owners in areas that have experienced power outages and/or low water pressure are urged to boil all water before using for one minute after boiling. They should also use bottled water for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food, or brushing their teeth. People should also avoid drinking from public fountains in affected areas.

“Crews have performed several rounds of repairs to the aging pipeline at the junction of Joseph E. Boone Boulevard and JP Brawley Drive. The system is gradually being brought back online to allow system pressure to be rebuilt,” DWM wrote of Atlanta in a press release. . Residents of these areas should soon have access to water.

“The boil water advisory remains in effect out of an abundance of caution and in accordance with Georgia EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) guidelines for public notices.” Drivers and pedestrians are still urged to avoid the area.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, who declared a state of emergency in the city Saturday evening, apologized to residents for the inconvenience caused caused by the water main break and said the boil water notice “will remain in effect until DWM is permitted to lift it in accordance with sampling protocols.”

In one of his updates posted Saturday evening to X, formerly Twitter, Dickens wrote that the department had tested the water in the affected areas and found no contamination.

Municipal officials wrote that residents affected by water outages can collect water from fire stations, up to a limit of one box per resident. The stations are located: 1-71 Elliot Street; 2- 1568 Jonesboro Road; 10-447 Boulevard; and 16-1048 Joseph E. Boone Boulevard.

The timeline for repairing the second break at 11th Street NE and West Peachtree Street NE remains uncertain.
