ATLANTA — More than 24 hours after a major water main broke in downtown Atlanta, officials say they are still working on the break.

Atlanta Watershed Management Commissioner Al Wiggins Jr. spoke with Channel 2 Action News Saturday morning and declared the break itself on Joseph E. Boone Blvd. and James P. Brawley Dr. had been repaired.

Department officials later walked back that statement and said they anticipated at least three more hours of work before the repairs were completed.

Wiggins says once the breakage is repaired, they will slowly pressurize the water system to ensure no further problems arise.

There is currently no deadline for full restoration of water service.

The city of Atlanta suffered at least four water main breaks Friday, two of which Watershed officials described as “major.”

The other major break occurred Friday evening at W. Peachtree St. and 11th St. in downtown Atlanta.

Wiggins said this breakup was not related to the breakup on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard. and James P. Brawley Dr.

Crews are now focused on repairing the downtown Atlanta station wagon.
