2023 MLB All-Star for Atlanta shuts down Tides for eight innings – The Virginian-Pilot

The Norfolk Tides lost for the fourth time in five games this week to Gwinnett, who scored six runs in the first inning and earned a 10-2 victory Saturday night in front of one of the largest Harbor Park crowds of the season, 10,563 people.

Bryce Elder, who was a 2023 MLB All-Star during a 12-4 season with 31 starts for Atlanta, pitched eight efficient innings to improve to 3-1 with the Stripers (27-29). He struck out 11 and walked two on 101 pitches as he attempts to return to the Braves, for whom he is 1-2 with a 6.46 ERA in five starts this year.

Norfolk had just four hits. Jackson Holliday, who doubled and walked despite two strikeouts, scored both runs for the Tides, extending his hitting streak to nine games and his on-base streak to 16 games. Billy Cook drove him home both times.

Tides starter Justin Armbruester (1-4) saw his earned run average rise to 9.70 while allowing seven runs (all earned), eight hits and two walks in five innings.

The Stripers quickly jumped on him. Yuli Gurriel doubled Ramón Laureano and Phillip Evans singled to Luke Williams for a 2-0 lead before Luke Waddell hit a grand slam to right field with one out, increasing the lead to 6-0.

Forrest Wall, Williams, Gurriel and Evans all had two of Gwinnett’s 13 hits. Williams and Evans hit home runs.

The finale of the six-game series is scheduled for Sunday at 1:05 p.m. and Chayce McDermott is scheduled to pitch for the Tides.
