Buffalo Bisons catcher Henry was hospitalized overnight after being hit by a backswing. He rests and recovers

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) – Buffalo wide receiver Payton Henry Bison was hospitalized overnight after being hit by a batter’s backswing Friday night and carried off the field on a stretcher.

In a statement released Saturday, the Toronto Blue Jays’ Triple-A affiliate said Henry was released from the hospital and is “doing well and continues to rest and recover.”

Henry was hit in the back of the head by Syracuse Mets third baseman Pablo Reyes’ swing in the seventh inning. He immediately fell to the ground upon contact and athletic trainers attended to him.

“You hate to see that,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Saturday. “On the one hand, Payton is such an incredible human being and person, so you hate to see that. As a former receiver too, you kind of know what that’s like.

“He’s doing well, which is a good thing, but that’s all we have. He’s going in the right direction.”

The officials decided not to continue the match after the injury.

The Mets were leading 4-2 at NBT Bank Stadium when the game was called.

THE Bison said later that night that Henry was “alert and appropriately responsive” at a hospital after what they called a “frightening incident.”

In their statement Saturday, they thanked the Mets and the medical support team at Upstate University Hospital for their assistance.

Henry, 26, was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth round of the 2016 amateur draft. He played in college at BYU.

Henry was assigned to Bison after signing a minor league deal with the Blue Jays last December.
