The Houston Texans appear to have high hopes for Blake Fisher

The Houston Texans aren’t playing with how they view Blake Fisher. The second-round pick is considered a versatile offensive lineman who can play inside or outside and will likely fight for playing time this year. With the offensive line needing a lot of work and significant improvement in quality of play, Fisher could be a key asset for the team heading into the 2024 season.

The club knows they need help on the offensive line, and he could end up being everything the team hoped for. This is likely why the team made a huge deal for the late second round pick. According to Ian Rapoport, the Texans made Fisher the first player, taken 27th in the 2nd round, the first player guaranteed money in the third year.

He is also the latest Texans rookie player to reach a deal after being drafted.

While giving him guaranteed money late in his contract could be seen as a desperate move by the franchise to get him under contract before getting too close to the start of the season, I don’t think it’s That. I think it’s much more likely that they are very impressed with Fisher and his abilities on the offensive line.

He has size, a good first step and the ability to understand a complicated playbook considering where he went to college (Notre Dame). So why wouldn’t the Texans be willing to shell out a little extra money to get Fischer to camp on time?

For a variety of reasons, the Texans have had poor play on the offensive line in 2023. Much of that poor play has mostly impacted the running game. That said, the poor offensive line contributed to CJ Stroud being sacked 11th most times in the NFL.

If the Texans can reduce the 47 sacks allowed and see an improvement in the running game simply by putting Fisher in the starting lineup at blocker or guard, why not do it? It’s not a lock that Fisher sees himself becoming a starter, he has to earn it. However, he gives the team a lot of hope of being better at the point of attack in 2024.

This is the one thing the Texas offense really needs to improve on from year to year.
