Water main break disrupts businesses, tourist attractions in downtown Atlanta and other parts of the city

Atlanta officials say a broken water main interrupted water service and led to low water pressure in the city’s downtown and other parts of the Georgia capital.

ATLANTA — A water main break interrupted water service and led to low water pressure in the city’s downtown and other parts of Georgia’s capital.

Crews were “working aggressively” on Friday to make emergency repairs to the 32-inch water main, the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management said in a statement.

“Water service was temporarily interrupted, impacting area residents, businesses and fire hydrants,” the agency said.

Some offices in Atlanta and Fulton County have closed due to the problem, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Tourist attractions were also affected, including the Georgia Aquarium, which ended its operations prematurely, the newspaper reported.

Zoo Atlanta closed early Friday at 1 p.m. due to water pressure issues, the zoo announced. The zoo, located southeast of downtown, “has emergency plans in place to ensure animals have access to water,” it said in a statement.
