Catch some of the city’s most exciting upcoming shows happening all month long, with our round-up of live theater and performing arts productions in June 2024.

This month, a wide range of performing arts is featured on Houston stages, including a new Broadway production, Tamarie Cooper’s summer show, and several spring performances drawing their final curtains.

From classical music to regional play premieres, musicals and dance, there is something for all tastes and budgets.

Opening this month

  • 35th Annual Kings & Queens Accordion Concert at Miller Outdoor Theater | Saturday June 1st | FREE – This highly anticipated annual concert of the state’s most dynamic artists will feature Las Fenix, 3-time Grammy Award winner Sunny Sauceda, as well as Marcus Ardoin and Da Zydeco Legendz. The evening is a showcase of the various styles of accordion music played in Texas. 7 p.m.
  • The Houston Chamber Choir presents Brubeck’s voice at the Stude concert hall | Saturday June 1st – The Grammy-winning choir is joined by Chris and Dan Brubeck and other special guests in a program that celebrates Dave Brubeck’s contributions to jazz and his work with new musical forms. $45; some discounts available. 7:30 p.m.
  • The selfish giant at the Asia Society Texas | Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2 – In this ingenious production by Taiwanese theater The Puppet & Its Double Theater, The selfish giant brings to life Oscar Wilde’s beloved story of a selfish giant who discovers the true meaning of friendship and generosity through the innocence of children. $20. Hours vary.
  • The Houston Symphony presents An Alpine Symphony at Jones Hall | Saturday June 1 and Sunday June 2 – Imagine flowery meadows, sparkling glaciers and breathtaking views from the top when music director Juraj Valčuha conducts one of the natural wonders of the music world, that of Strauss. An Alpine Symphony downtown. $35 and up. Saturday 8 p.m.; Sunday 2:30 p.m.

  • Paul Hope Cabaret presents Ultra Lounge: Tikis in the mist at the Ovations nightclub | Mondays from June 3 to June 17 – Enjoy tiki-themed cocktails while listening to a rendition of songs from the 50s and 60s, which are sure to get you in the summer spirit. Expect selections like “Beyond the Sea,” “Misty” and more. $20 and up. Monday at 7:30 p.m.
  • Broadway Across America presents Hairspray at the Hobby Center | From Tuesday June 4 to Sunday June 9 – You can’t stop the beat in this fun musical comedy based on the John Waters film. It’s the story of Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teenager who wants a chance to dance in the spotlight in 1960s Baltimore. Audiences will love watching her try to achieve her dream. $35 and up. Hours vary.
  • Mercury presents From baroque to boleros at Discovery Green | Wednesday June 5 | FREE – Members of the Mercury Orchestra present this community concert celebrating centuries of music from across Latin America. Expect fun baroque dances and fiery boleros sung by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Duarte. 8 p.m.
  • Houston Ballet presents Four Seasons at the Wortham Center | From Thursday June 6 to Sunday June 16 – This mixed rehearsal program highlights the artistic depth of ballet. Four dances, including that of Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux and the world premiere of the piece by choreographer Dwight Rhoden The four Seasons, to the recognizable music of Antonio Vivaldi, highlight the program. $45 and up. Hours vary.

  • ROCO presents Magnetic at Kinder High School for Performing and Visual Arts | Friday June 7 | FREE – This concert showcases ROCO’s innovative approach to classical music, as well as its commitment to presenting new works. Expect an evening of ROCO favorites and commissions, as well as the premiere of a work by one of the finalists in the EarShot call for scores for early-career female composers. 11am.
  • The star girl at Unity Brenham | From Thursday June 13 to Sunday June 30 – The Brenham Theater presents Neil Simon’s comedy about two men using their apartment to publish a subversive magazine and what happens when a girl with a bubbly personality moves in down the hall. $30; $15 for students. Hours vary.
  • Treason to the arts of the playroom | Saturday June 15 | In progress – Harold Pinter’s play about a love triangle plays out in reverse. We meet the lovers at the end of their illicit affair and watch it return to its origins, exploring power dynamics, love and friendship. This production runs until Saturday July 6. $40; Wednesday shows are $5. 7:30 p.m.
  • The Catastrophic Theater presents Tamarie’s Texan toast! at the MATCH | Thursday June 20 | In progress – It’s not summer without the annual chaos coming from the mind of Tamarie Cooper. This year’s show sees Cooper and his merry maniacs deliver a production as big as the Lone Star State. Expect references to high school football, gas station beavers, flag parades, giant cockroaches, tons of guns, Whataburger glory and much more. This production runs until Saturday August 3. Pay what you can. Hours vary.

Closing this month

  • Dance Source Houston presents Barnstorm Dance Fest at MATCH | Until Saturday June 1st – Celebrating the breadth, depth and diversity of dance in Greater Houston and beyond, this festival is an exciting cross-section of dance genres. Expect a weekend of performances, workshops and more. $25. Hours vary.
  • Houston Ballet presents Mayerling at the Wortham Center | Until Sunday June 2 – With choreography by Sir Kenneth MacMillan and music by Franz Liszt, this ballet tells the story of Crown Prince Rudolf, sole heir to the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 1880s. It follows scandal and political intrigue through an unhappy marriage, sensual alliances and morbid obsessions, leading to tragic consequences. $25 and up. Hours vary.
  • TUTS presents Disney News at the Hobby Center | Until Sunday June 2 – The wildly popular musical tells the story of a group of journalists and their allies, who stand up to some of the most powerful editors in New York. This new production of the crowd-pleasing show should be a family favorite. $40 and up. Hours vary.
  • Friday the 13th at midnight at the Ensemble Theater | Until Sunday June 2 – As family and friends gather for the reading of Angus Black’s will, an intriguing and hilarious journey unfolds. Hilarious, unless you’re the next person to join Angus in the afterlife. $37 and up. Hours vary.
  • Dirt Dogs Theater presents Appropriate at the MATCH | Until Saturday June 8 – When the members of the Lafayette clan gather at the Arkansas home of their recently deceased patriarch, they make a horrific discovery. What secrets lie beneath their father’s trash and hoarded memories? $30. Hours vary.
  • The steps present Othello: The Remix at Gordy | Until Sunday June 9 – In this hip-hop adaptation, a DJ plays Shakespeare’s legendary masterpiece of jealousy, revenge and passion on stage. The show was a New York Times critics choose and will certainly present the story in a whole new light. $25 and up. Hours vary.
  • On the Verge Theater presents Love, loss and what I wore at Alta Arts | Until Sunday June 9 – By turns hilarious and poignant, this comedy from Nora and Delia Ephron, based on the book by Ilene Beckerman, explores the importance of clothing in women’s lives. $20 and up. Hours vary.
  • Take measures at the Main Street Theater | Until Sunday June 16 – In this British farce, a lawyer has bitten off more than he can chew, overseeing the sale of a ruined, possibly haunted house that was once a brothel. Two couples, the lawyer and a real estate agent, find themselves plunged into chaos in this play by Alan Aykbourn. $35 and up. Hours vary.
  • Present courses The arguments for the existence of God at Gordy | Until Sunday June 30 – From the writer of the Oscar-winning film The whale comes this story of Ryan and Keith, who strike up an unlikely friendship after meeting at their daughters’ daycare. Together, they face fatherhood, loneliness and the confusing terms of a mortgage. $25 and up. Hours vary.
