Here’s What Makes Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels Unique

Here’s What Makes Buffalo Trace Bourbon Barrels Unique

Few spirits are more quintessentially American than bourbon. Corn-based whiskey dates back to the origins of the United States itself and, by law, also requires production in one of the 50 states. This is a popular style of spirit, with over 700 distilleries in operation. However, there is one brand that stands out, both for the flavor and the history of its bourbon: Buffalo Trace.

In fact, the distillery is a National Historic Landmark due to its status as the oldest operating alcohol production facility in the United States, as well as the remarkable preservation of 19th-century equipment. Such a legacy, along with an exceptional set of releases like the highly regarded Pappy Van Winkle, makes this distillery one of the most revered producers in the world.

To make such renowned bourbons, the distillery’s attention to detail extends to its barrels as well. The brand only uses newly charred wood aged for six months before preserving alcohol. It is made from a composition of white oak, with specimens subjected to careful examination before use. Buffalo Trace’s selectivity regarding its barrels leads to such delicious tasting bottles.

The precise details of the barrels used for a bottle of Buffalo Trace bourbon are not made public. As with other types of bourbon, each bottle of Buffalo Trace contains a blend of alcohol from up to 30 barrels. The brand does not publish an age statement and places the barrels in optimal locations to get the most out of the interactions between the bourbon and the barrel.

After their use for the production of bourbon, Buffalo Trace markets its oak barrels. Each has a 53-gallon capacity and can be used by brewers, producing particularly flavorful bourbon barrel-aged beers, wines or ciders. The wooden barrel imparts a spicy character, with notes of clove and rye.

Each bottle comes with its own unique palate, showcasing the diversity of flavors produced by the distillery. They all spend time in white oak, but the resulting palate couldn’t be more different. However, as with all Buffalo Trace products, expect a refined result.
