Houston’s NRG Stadium Suffers Apparent Roof Damage From Hurricane Beryl Nearly 16 Years After Ike

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Hurricane Beryl that hit southeast Texas may have damaged Houston’s NRG Stadium.

On Monday, several Eyewitness News crews captured what appears to be a hole in a grooved portion of the venue’s retractable roof.

ABC13 reached out to NRG Stadium officials, who said only that they were waiting for a full assessment to release a damage report.

Beryl made landfall overnight in Matagorda County as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 80 mph (130 km/h) before moving north-northeast through Houston. ABC13 tracked wind gusts near 60 mph (96 km/h) in the NRG Park area as Beryl made landfall.

The 22-year-old stadium has already faced hurricane-related damage. Hurricane IkeA Category 2 hurricane that made landfall in September 2008 caused extensive damage to the venue’s roof.

NRG Stadium’s general manager at the time said the storm tore off pieces of the stadium’s retractable roof. The damage forced the postponement of the next Ravens-Texans game.
