Police in Bloomington arrest man who allegedly seriously injured woman during chase

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – A Bloomington man was arrested on a search warrant in connection with a 2021 incident in which he allegedly struck a Martinsville woman with his vehicle during a police chase through multiple counties.

According to Bloomington police, officers arrested 30-year-old O’Shawn McCullough on Wednesday at around 9:43 p.m. in the 2400 block of South Winslow Court. A warrant had been out for his arrest for three years.

Previous reports indicate that just before 4 p.m. on August 5, 2021, McCullough struck a Martinsville woman with his car while fleeing police officers during a chase. The woman suffered “catastrophic injuries,” including a broken femur, a fractured right foot, a fractured sternum, multiple broken ribs and multiple lumbar vertebrae.

According to BPD, the incident began in Bloomington when officers stopped McCullough for a reported traffic violation. He allegedly took off running and led police on a chase that continued at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour as the pursuit crossed into Martinsville, with McCullough attempting to evade multiple stop sticks.

He eventually hit her before losing control of his Cadillac Escalade and colliding head-on with the woman’s vehicle. McCullough was transported by rescue helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital and was placed in an induced coma, court documents say.

This coma apparently did not last very long. According to court documents, McCullough ran out of the hospital the next day and could not be found.

The documents also claim that a gun and $2,300 in cash were recovered from McCullough’s vehicle. In 2015, McCullough took a plea deal on cocaine trafficking charges and had previously been charged with resisting arrest, drug offenses and weapons possession, according to online court records.

After a three-year search, McCullough was located in Bloomington, handcuffed, and taken to the Monroe County Jail. He was charged with the following preliminary offenses:

  • Resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Carrying a handgun without a permit, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Leaving the scene of an accident, a Class A misdemeanor
  • Possession of a weapon by a serious violent felon, a Level 4 felony
  • Violation of probation conditions

According to online court records, McCullough appeared for an initial hearing in Monroe Circuit Court 3 on Thursday afternoon.
