Mayor’s office says large pipe arrived Sunday, signaling possible end to water main breaks – 95.5 WSB

At the same time, Midtown crews received a key piece of pipe that the mayor’s office says is critical to repairing the most problematic break.

This happened at 11th Street and West Peachtree Street.

A large waterline ruptured there Friday afternoon, according to Atlanta Watershed Management. It was the second major line to be ruptured that day.

The first was in Vine City, where several major lines intersect. These pauses forced the city to place more than 200 neighborhoods under a boil water advisory.

Several Atlanta Fire and Rescue stations distributed cases of water to those affected over the weekend.

Crews repaired the large break on Joseph E. Boone Boulevard. in Vine City Saturday evening.

That night, Mayor Andre Dickens declared a state of emergency to allow Atlanta Watershed Management to bypass the city’s purchasing protocol and purchase parts more quickly.

The next night, the large piece of pipeline needed to repair the Midtown rupture arrived.

People without running water are wondering if smaller breaks are inevitable as crews begin to restore pressure to the 80-year-old pipeline system.

“I feel like all the old pipes are starting to give way, which is very problematic,” McKissock said. “I don’t think it’s the end of anything too soon.”
