Victim identified in fatal shooting on Main Street

Buffalo police have identified Darius Spates as the victim in the fatal shooting Sunday morning on Main Street.

Spates, 42, arrived at Erie County Medical Center shortly after 2:30 a.m. Sunday in a civilian vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to an email from Buffalo Police Department spokesman Michael DeGeorge.

The shooting happened outside Luxor Steak & Lobster, a restaurant on Main Street near Winspear Avenue. City officials, under the direction of Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia, ordered the restaurant closed, placing a “cease all operations” sign on the front door.

This restaurant is the second establishment ordered to close by the city in May due to gun violence. Del Denby’s Tavern on Hertel Avenue was closed after Madjid Elbert was killed on the patio early in the morning of May 7. This bar was allowed to reopen over the weekend, operating under new restrictions imposed by municipal authorities.

Police are asking anyone with information about the Spates shooting to call the department’s confidential line at 716-847-2255.
