2024 GA Primary Election Results: Willis, McAfee Await Vote Counting

ATLANTA, Ga. — The polls are closed and Georgia voters have decided the fate of candidates in Georgia’s 2024 primary elections.

Two notable names on the ballot in Georgia are Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis and Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, two prominent figures in an election subversion case against former President Donald Trump .

Willis gained national attention over the past year by leading election case prosecutions against Trump and 18 allies. McAfee also rose to fame running the courtroom. Both sought re-election in their respective races.

Polls closed at 7 p.m. Tuesday and voters must be in line by then for their selection to be considered.

Early voting for the primaries began on April 29 and ended on May 17. Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office reported that more than 300,000 in-person ballots were accepted during early voting.

Walton, Union, Walker, Thomas, Richmond, Rockdale, Paulding, Muscogee, Lowndes, Liberty, Henry, Houston, Gwinnett, Hall, Fulton, Cobb, Cherokee, Bibb, Fayette and DeKalb had some of the highest turnout rates among all 159 counties of Georgia.

The majority of the more than 62,00 mail-in ballots were requested, and more than 26,800 of them were returned and accepted, according to data from Raffensperger’s office.

On the ballot in Georgia’s capital, Willis will face Republican attorney Courtney Kramer and Democratic author and attorney Christian Wise Smith.

Willis declined a debate invitation in mid-April from the Atlanta Press Club, Atlanta News First reported.

Meanwhile, McAfee is one of several judges being challenged in Atlanta’s 5th Circuit Superior Court.

Those listed on the ballot for Superior Court Judge are as follows, alongside McAfee:

  • Thomas A. Cox Jr. (incumbent)
  • Rachelle Carnesale (holder)
  • Kimberly M. Esmond Adams (incumbent)

All candidates for the position of Superior Court judge are impartial.

If a second round between candidates must take place, it will take place on June 18. The deadline to request a postal vote in the second round is June 7.

Early voting is expected to begin no later than June 10 and end on June 14.

Early voting in the runoff should occur as early as possible before the runoff, but no later than the second Monday before the runoff, election officials said.
