MLB players, coaches and front offices go through a one-day diversity, equity and inclusion program, and Chief Baseball Officer Craig Barlow noted that more work is needed in that regard.

The Boston Red Sox have announced the suspension of outfielder Jarren Duran after he allegedly shouted a homophobic slur at a fan who booed him. During the press conference, Duran, the MVP of the 2024 All-Star Game, said he believes his microphone was turned off shortly after the fan was insulted.

Accordingly CNNDuran told a fan who booed him at bat during a Red Sox home game against the Houston Astros on Aug. 11 to “shut up, you motherfucker.” Duran was mic’d up for the game, or wearing a microphone on his uniform, and the hot mic caught the insult.

Accordingly The athleteAlthough Duran wanted to be honest and remorseful in a press conference on Aug. 12, that may have been undermined by his decision to wear a T-shirt that read “F—’em.” Duran has worn the T-shirt under his uniform for most of the season to remind himself to block out the noise and has spoken openly about his mental health struggles.

“Before we begin, I just want to say that some fans have reached out to me and told me they are disappointed in me. I wanted to let them know that I am sorry for my behavior and I will work to be better for them,” Duran said.

He went on to deny that he meant anything by the insult: “There was no intention behind the word that was used,” Duran said. “It was just the heat of the moment and it was just said. That word came out is on me. But there was no intention behind that word being used.”

“I apologized to the umpire and the catcher for my behavior because they were right there. They heard it. I assume they turned off the microphone because of my inappropriate words, so it wasn’t recorded. But I know I apologized to them for the word I said.”

According to a statement from the Boston Red Sox, Duran will be suspended for the next two games. His game wages, which total about $8,200, will be donated to the Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), the largest organization in the United States dedicated to supporting, educating and advocating for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer people and their families.

Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy said The athlete They made the decision together with members of Major League Baseball, who, according to Kennedy, played a key role in determining Duran’s punishment.

“We spoke to Major League Baseball last night immediately after discussing the issue with Jarren, so they were very involved in the discussion and the outcome of the suspension,” Kennedy said.

Accordingly The athleteMLB players, coaches and administration go through a one-day diversity, equity and inclusion program, and Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow indicated to the outlet that more work is needed on that front.

“I think it’s clear evidence that while we’ve made progress and done great work, it’s not nearly enough,” Breslow said The athlete“I think an incident like this is an important reminder that there is still a lot of progress to be made. And at the same time, I think we can recognize that Jarren immediately took responsibility and strived to do better, and we can all relate to that.”

Breslow continued, “It’s disappointing and frustrating. I think at the same time, we see that Jarren, as a leader as he is, has flaws. We all do.”
