One of the New York Giants’ weakest position groups is their defensive secondary, a unit that lacks experience and, to some extent, potential. Aside from former first-round pick Deonte Banks, the prospects at CB2 and in the slot are somewhat limited.

Evaluating Giants’ defensive secondary: Competition heats up

However, there is an interesting competition at cornerback alongside Banks. Third-year defensive back Cor’Dale Flott will be competing with Nick McCloud, a former undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame in 2021. The Buffalo Bills originally signed McCloud before he moved to Cincinnati, then spent the last two seasons with the Giants.

In 2022, McCloud played 583 snaps, allowing 296 yards, four touchdowns and four pass breakups. Last season, he saw 312 snaps but allowed just 152 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Based on his stats and video analysis, he could be a serious contender for the starting corner job, although head coach Brian Daboll indicated several weeks ago that they have a lot of confidence in Flott.

The role and challenges of Cor’Dale Flott

Flott, a 22-year-old defensive back from LSU who was selected in the third round, gave up 288 yards, three touchdowns and three pass breakups in 519 snaps last season. He was inconsistent, especially in tough outings against Green Bay and Philadelphia, when he gave up a combined 151 yards and a touchdown.

Originally considered a nickel cornerback, Flott’s frame doesn’t lend itself well to run support. He struggles to tackle and shake off blocks, which aren’t his strong suits. The Giants would be better off playing him on the outside, where he can isolate and use his agile movements to mimic bigger receivers.

McCloud’s growth prospects

Conversely, McCloud has just as much of a chance to win the starting job, having already started training camp in impressive fashion. The Giants recognize the potential in both players and, ultimately, they’ll let the best man win the job.
