Southwest Tennessee Community College’s network systems affected by “cyber incident”

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Southwest Tennessee Community College has announced that it has identified a cyber incident that has impacted its network systems.

They say this issue goes beyond the server problem first reported to the college on July 3.

In a statement, the university said it is actively working with computer forensics experts to “thoroughly investigate the incident, determine its full extent” and “restore full functionality of the computer system as quickly as possible.”

“We take great care to protect the important information our students and staff entrust to us,” said Tracy D. Hall, president of Southwest Tennessee Community College. “Unfortunately, in today’s digital landscape, cybercrime is becoming increasingly common and poses significant risks. Our team responded immediately to secure our systems and is working diligently to restore our online services and strengthen our defenses. We appreciate the cooperation and patience of our students, faculty and staff as we navigate through these circumstances.”

The College will continue its work and instruction remotely. Classes and registration for the second summer semester will be postponed to Monday, July 15, with registration extended to July 19.

Child care centers on the Macon Cove and Union Avenue campuses will remain open during regular business hours.

The statement said the college is “coordinating its efforts with the Tennessee Board of Regents and appropriate state officials.”
