To fix the problem, it would cost between $9,000 and $12,000.

After researching the value of the vehicle, Yost discovered that there would be no point in having it serviced.

“I think the car is finished,” he said. “It’s five years old now, investing in it and putting it back into service doesn’t seem worth it.”

Yost is finalizing the decommissioning of the car before the department puts it out for municipal bidding once it is officially removed from the fleet.

For a new police car, with the added equipment, the approximate cost is $54,000, according to Yost.

Since the April meeting, commission board members have visited the East Buffalo Municipal Building on Fairground Road to explore whether the department could move into the available space.

“I didn’t see how, financially, it would make sense for us to absorb the cost,” said BVRPD Commissioner Chairman Jack Malloy. “We took a look at it, but we just don’t see how it could work financially.”

The department still owes nearly $100,000 in investments at its headquarters at 1610 Industrial Boulevard, Malloy noted.

The commission is changing its job description for a new police chief as Yost is expected to retire in January.

Commissioners discussed advertising the position starting in June.
