Delta #DL956 pilots on oxygen masks during emergency landing in Atlanta

Delta flight from Atlanta to Denver made emergency landing due to smoke in cockpit.

On Tuesday, May 14, 2024, Delta Flight #DL956 departed Atlanta at 10:28 p.m. EDT for a 3-hour flight to Denver.

The Airbus A321 (registration N379DN) was guided to 14,000 feet after takeoff from Runway 26L at ATL Airport.

Just two minutes later, the pilots contacted the tower to declare an emergency and be directed to runway 27R.

While being asked to maintain an altitude of 10,000 feet, the pilots reported having trouble due to smoke and fumes in the cockpit.

The pilots also informed the controller that there were 185 souls on board, with 30,800 pounds of fuel remaining. The pilots were wearing oxygen masks during the incident.

Oxygen masks are powered from an oxygen tank, unlike passengers who receive oxygen from a canister undergoing a chemical reaction. Pilots’ masks are sealed to their faces, ensuring they receive the oxygen needed to maintain control of the plane.

The aircraft landed safely on right runway 27 and continued taxiing to the gate.
