11 Broadway Shows to See in Fall 2024

Broadway has always been a magnet (and magnet) for A-list talent, but this fall’s lineup of upcoming and newly opened shows is especially star-studded. From hilarious new musicals to topical dramas to revivals of classics, the season is filled with stars returning to their theater roots or making their Broadway debuts. The lineup includes Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, and Tony winners, as well as the most Tony Award-winning artist in theater history. If you’re looking to go celebrity-spotting in New York City’s Theater District, here’s your must-see list.

Carol Burnett, 91, burst onto the scene with her Tony Award-nominated role in this shattered 1959 fairy tale. Its cast includes a slew of next-generation TV comedy stars, including Sutton Foster (Younger) in Burnett’s star role as the unfortunate Princess Winnifred; Michael Urie (Ugly Betty) as Prince Dauntless; and SNL Legend Ana Gasteyer, 57, as Queen Aggravaine.

The roommate

On Broadway until December 15

In 2022, Patti LuPone, 75, publicly declared that she was leaving Actors’ Equity and would be leaving Broadway for good. But the decision didn’t stick. She starred opposite Mia Farrow, 79, in this oddball comedy about two very different women who move in together to pay the bills, until Farrow gets COVID after the premiere, and Marsha Mason, 82, takes on the role. Stay tuned to see if Farrow returns. She doesn’t have much experience on the Broadway stage — her last gig was a few weeks in Love letters in 2014 — so when she’s feeling better and is back on stage, fans shouldn’t pass up the chance to see the actress in her sort-of-retirement live performance.

The satire tackles hot-button issues, but it is done with plenty of humor.
