Man shot dead by police in Buffalo

Few details were immediately available Wednesday morning after confirmation that a Buffalo Police Department officer had shot and killed a man hours earlier.

The incident happened early Wednesday, shortly after midnight, near the intersection of Kensington Avenue and Poultney Avenue, according to the Buffalo Police Department. The victim, identified as a man, was taken to a city hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The incident is being investigated by both Buffalo homicide detectives and the police department’s internal affairs division; the internal investigation is required by department procedure.

The New York State Attorney General’s Bureau of Special Investigations was also notified of the incident, in accordance with the policy followed after all police-involved shootings.

The identity of the victim has not yet been released.

This is the second time in 2024 that Buffalo police have shot and killed someone; in February, officers were called to a home on Reed Street by a man who may have called 911 himself.

The victim in the incident, later identified as Edward Holmes, 58, was reportedly holding a shotgun when officers arrived and failed to follow instructions to drop his weapon. Holmes allegedly fired one round from his gun before two officers opened fire. His autopsy revealed that Holmes had been hit by multiple bullets.
