Atlanta MARTA Airport reopens after million renovation – WABE

The MARTA station at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport reopened its turnstiles to passengers Monday after a six-week hiatus — just in time for the Memorial Day travel rush.

The station was closed to users from April 8 to May 19 due to major renovation work.

This included the installation of new platform pavers and new terrazzo flooring in the concourse, as well as the preparation, sealing and painting of the track and concourse walls.

The airport station project cost $55 million and is part of MARTA’s multi-year, $1 billion station rehabilitation program.

“This was an incredibly successful project and I want to thank our customers for supporting us as we completed this necessary work,” said Collie Greenwood, MARTA general manager and CEO, in a press release. “The temporary closure of the station significantly reduced the total construction time by 17 months and ensured the safety of workers and customers. »

While the station was closed, MARTA provided shuttle bus service from Hartsfield-Jackson to the College Park station. Ridership was approximately 320,000 people over the 42-day period the shuttles were used, according to the press release.

Repair work on the airport station began in June 2022. Other upcoming updates include replacement of ceilings and lighting, a new RideStore, complete rehabilitation of the existing elevator, a public art installation, replacement of all signage and a renovation of employee spaces.

MARTA also updated the content of its digital signs at the Airport Station and all other stations to display more service information regarding train arrivals and scheduled bus arrivals in real time.
