Tragic tire explosion at Delta Air Lines center kills 2

A typical day at Delta Air Lines took a tragic turn when a tire explosion occurred at the TechOps facility near Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The explosion, which occurred on August 27, killed two employees and injured another.

The Clayton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the deceased as Mirko F. Marweg, 58, of Stone Mountain, Georgia, and Luis Aldarondo, 37, of Newnan, Georgia.

The incident was confirmed shortly after 5 a.m. and involved a wheel component. According to reports, the explosion occurred while wheel components were being disassembled for maintenance at a wheel and brake shop. Delta said the parts were not attached to any aircraft at the time of the crash.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has announced an investigation into the incident and Delta is cooperating fully with local authorities.

Condolences have poured in from various organizations, including the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, which represents aviation industry employees in North America. The union expressed its commitment to supporting those affected by this tragedy.

Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens also shared his condolences on social media, saying, “I offer my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased Delta employees. My thoughts are also with those who were injured and I hope they make a speedy and full recovery.”

While the airport confirmed the explosion did not disrupt flight operations, Delta TechOps President John Laughter said counseling services would be made available to employees in need.

This tragic event underscores the importance of workplace safety, especially in high-risk industries like aviation. As investigations continue, the Delta community remains united in support of those affected.
