EF-1 tornado confirmed west of Houston amid Tropical Storm Alberto

HOUSTON – Tropical Storm Alberto brought heavy rain to South Texas, storm surge for our coastal communities, intense waves and now a confirmed tornado.

The National Weather Service confirmed that an EF-1 tornado touched down near Bellville between 5:25 p.m. and 5:27 p.m. Wednesday.

This fast-moving tornado was associated with the outer rain bands of Tropical Storm Alberto. Maximum winds were estimated at around 100 mph. The path was nearly two miles long (1.90 miles) with a maximum width of 100 meters.

The EF-1 rating was determined by a National Weather Service survey team.

The team found numerous uprooted and broken hardwood trees, as well as damage to a business that had its metal roof torn off. Additionally, two homes were damaged by high winds and impacts from trees and debris.

The tornado was northwest of the city. (Copyright 2024 by KPRC Click2Houston – All rights reserved.)

The NWS said the tornado initially touched down northwest of Bellville near SH-36 before crossing Koy Road. The tornado crossed SH-159 before heading toward a private ranch. Since the trail was moved to a private ranch, the path length may be longer than determined.

Tropical tornadoes are very common because there are many rotations inherent in tropical systems.

If you find yourself in a tornado warning, remember that the safest place inside your home is an interior room. You want to put as many walls as possible between you and the outside and stay away from windows.
