One person dies in early morning fire near Springfield

Sangamon County Sheriff’s Sergeant Andrew Henton said firefighters were called after a neighbor saw smoke coming from a home in the 300 block of Walnut Street around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon confirmed that the body found in the home was a 63-year-old man.

The man’s identity will be kept secret until next of kin are notified, Allmon said.

Calls were made to several fire departments in the area.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal was called to the scene, Henton said.

Allmon said an autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Dawson is located about 20 minutes northeast of Springfield.
