The Houston Texans’ divisional foes’ biggest moves

The Houston Texans’ divisional foes’ biggest moves

With the NFL schedule now fully revealed and training camp less than two months away, it’s probably time for us as Houston Texans fans to start paying a little more attention to the other three AFC South teams.

A season ago, the Texans were watching the Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans and Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, in May 2024, the division has been virtually flipped on its head, with the Texans virtually tied for money to win the AFC South in 2024, just as they did as a huge long shot in 2023 .

No team in the division has done more to improve its roster than the Texans. Hell, you could argue that no team in the entire NFL has done more to improve its roster than the Texans. However, their division brethren have collectively been quite aggressive this offseason. With that in mind, which action by each team concerns you the most as a Texas fan?

Here we go….

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS: Keeping the house in order
The Colts haven’t gone out of the building for help much this offseason. Instead, general manager Chris Ballard opted to direct his resources toward keeping the roster intact. On the offensive side of the football, they prioritized extending WR Michael Pittman, Jr., and succeeded. Then, defensively, they managed to bring back secondary mainstays CB Kenny Moore and S Julian Blackmon, while re-signing DT Grover Stewart and extending DT DeForest Buckner. So I’m not boiling this down to a specific move for the Colts, but rather citing their overall strategy.
Honorable mention: signed JOE FLACCO as backup QB

JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS: Editor BRIAN THOMAS, Jr.
The Jaguars have done everything possible in free agency (and the Calvin Ridley trade) over the past few years to ensure that QB Trevor Lawrence has optimal weaponry. Unfortunately, Ridley turned them away at the last second in March and went to AFC South rival Tennessee. The Jaguars recovered well, however, signing a solid No. 2 or 3 receiver in Gabe Davis, then drafting Thomas with the 23rd overall pick. Thomas took a back seat to LSU teammate Malik Nabors with the Tigers, but will have the chance to go number one with the Jags.
Honorable mention: re-signing of DT JOSH ALLEN, signing of WR GABE DAVIS

TENNESSEE TITANS: Recruitment of BILL CALLAHAN as OL coach
The Titans have made huge strides with the players they acquired like Ridley in free agency, as well as the trade and signing of former Chiefs CB L’Jarius Sneed. However, the Titans’ biggest problem last season was their leaky offensive line, which we saw in the Texans’ two wins over the Titans. The Texans’ defensive front manhandled the Titans’ offensive line. Enter Callahan, the grizzled veteran O-line coach and son of new Titans head coach Brian Callahan. The elder Callahan is well-respected around the league and probably a good enough mentor to take the Titans offensive line from bottom of the league to middle of the pack on the quality of his teaching alone.

Honorable Mention: Signed WR CALVIN RIDLEY, traded for CB L’JARIUS SNEED
