From employee reports and the Apopka Police Department

Apopka police officers responded to a 911 call about a medical incident at The Oasis at Wekiva apartment complex around 4 p.m. Friday, police said in a statement.

After their arrival, the officers began to assist the patient until the arrival of the Apopka Fire Department. After the patient was taken to the hospital, Officers began questioning a male resident of the apartment when he pulled out a handgun. immediately retreated from the apartment. Central Florida Metro SWAT responded and when they entered the apartment, they found a man dead inside the apartment, apparently from self-inflicted suicide.Gunshot wound inflicted.”

The Central Florida Metro SWAT is comprised of officers from the Apopka, Maitland, Ocoee, Winter Garden and Winter Park police departments. The unit responds to calls in these five cities.

Apopka Police Chief Michael McKinley was glad his officers left the apartment rather than reacting aggressively after he pulled out a gun.

“He pulled out a firearm pretty quickly and they left the apartment,” McKinley said. “And I want to commend them for that. They did not attack him. They retreated for the safety of everyone. They did the right thing: They left the apartment, secured it and had the SWAT team come and take control.”

McKinley also spoke about a larger problem facing Apopka and the entire country: opioid abuse.

“Apopka is no different than any other community,” he said. “We are a microcosm of society. We have the same problems that society has. Opioid overdoses affect the city of Apopka. It’s a shame. We hope people get the help they need. We try to help them when we can, when we’re out in force. But there’s a bigger picture out there. We have a drug problem. Society has a drug problem. We need to try to break that cycle and help people.”

According to McKinley, the woman involved in the incident is in stable condition.

The APD did not release the names of the two people involved in the incident.
