Buffalo girl killed in Saturday shooting identified

The 14-year-old homicide victim in the Alexander Place shooting Saturday night has been identified by Buffalo police as Jazzmine Fomby, a Buffalo charter school student.

Crime Stoppers of WNY is offering up to $7,500 for information leading to an arrest in the shooting that left Jazzmine dead and five other teens injured after police broke up a large fight at an outdoor party air.

Three teenagers injured in Saturday’s shooting — two 15-year-old boys and a 16-year-old girl — were treated and released from Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge. A 16-year-old boy was hit by gunfire and refused treatment at the scene.

Another 15-year-old boy remained in critical condition Monday and is expected to recover, ECMC officials told police.

An hour before the shooting, police broke up a noisy party of several hundred young people after receiving a call at 10:21 p.m. about loud music and a large number of minors smoking outside.

A call ten minutes later reported fighting in or near a parking lot along Alexander Place near East Ferry Street, outside a senior apartment complex, the police said. Chief of Detectives Craig Macy during a news conference Sunday afternoon.

A call about shots fired came in around 11:10 p.m., along with a report that a person had been shot a few minutes later, Macy said.

The shooting occurred four blocks from the Tops supermarket, where a racist shooting in 2022 claimed the lives of 10 people and injured three others.

Additional patrols will continue to be in place around the scene of the shooting, as well as at high schools across the city of Buffalo, DeGeorge said.

Mayor Byron W. Brown said Sunday that Jazzmine was a student at a local charter school and that several of the other victims were Buffalo Public Schools students.

District Superintendent Tonja Williams and the entire district extend their thoughts and prayers to all the family members and friends of the shooting victims, BPS spokesman Jeffrey Hammond said.

“Superintendent Williams has asked Crisis Prevention and Response Teams to be available this week to assist students and staff facing loss, grief or trauma and to have a presence of increased security at schools potentially impacted by this tragic incident,” Hammond said in a statement. statement. “As this is an ongoing criminal investigation, the district will not provide additional comment at this time.”

Brown appeared on his weekly WUFO radio show Sunday, urging the shooter or shooters to surrender.

“If you have any conscience or remorse for killing a 14-year-old girl, you should contact the Buffalo Police Department and turn yourself in,” Brown said. “This is a senseless crime. Opening fire on a group of children makes absolutely no sense.”
