NEW BUFFALO — The new Glik’s store debuted in downtown New Buffalo with a grand opening celebration on May 23.

The Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce kicked off the event at 9 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Chamber Executive Director Kimberlee Wendt said Glik’s New Buffalo will enhance the shopping experience in the downtown district.

Jeff Glik, fourth-generation president and CEO of Glik’s Clothing Company, unfurled a ribbon of dollar bills that he said would be donated (after the welcoming ceremony) to the New Buffalo Railroad Museum “for their incredible photographs that they allowed us to present in our store.”

Taking up residence in the former Whittaker House location at 26 North Whittaker St., the 127-year-old family-owned business is excited to begin a new chapter in its deep history that began when founder Joseph Glik began selling goods on a horse-drawn vehicle. wagon in northern Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska.

“I don’t know why it took us 127 years to find New Buffalo, but we’re happy to be here today,” Jeff Glik said during the dedication ceremony.

Jeff Glik said the family business grew from 12 stores in 1980 to 74 with the opening in New Buffalo.

He said SW Walters Construction brought the 1871 building at 26 North Whittaker back to life.

The grand opening on May 23 included a drawing to win a $127 shopping spree and a discount for military personnel during Memorial Day weekend.

The Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce is planning a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Tapa Taco located in the historic Gordon Beach Inn at 5 p.m. on June 5.

The public is invited to participate in the party and then stay to order an evening meal or a small plate accompanied by a drink at the bar. Tapa Taco is the latest business to join the pair of local businesses, Gordon Beach Inn and Lakeside Inn, run by Sam Darrigrand, the innkeeper.

“It was a natural fit to expand our guest experiences and brand to include a dining venue with great vibes and food to share,” Darrigrand said.
