Work to begin next month at busy intersection to improve BeltLine safety – WSB-TV Channel 2

ATLANTA — The Atlanta BeltLine will begin transforming a key intersection to make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Construction is expected to begin next month on Monroe Drive, at the intersection of Kanuga Street, 10th Street and the Eastside Trail entrance.

The project plans to add a raised intersection with new crosswalks, pedestrian signals, traffic signals, a bicycle crossing and a plaza.

Channel 2 Action News was there when city officials broke ground on the new construction project in August to help connect the Eastside Trail to Piedmont Park.

“We need to deprioritize this segment of travelers, which is motorists, and think about everyone who uses this intersection,” Atlanta DOT Commissioner Solomon Caviness said at the time.

This part of the project will be a major factor in connecting these parts of the BeltLine.

Atlanta BeltLine CEO Clyde Higgs helped secure $350 million from the city, donations and a federal grant to accelerate construction there and across the city.

“We’re in a ramp-up mode for construction of the BeltLine, and again, most people don’t realize that 80 percent of this project is either under construction or completed within the next two years,” said Higgs.
