Kozhikode: In a shocking incident, a four-year-old girl’s surgery went horribly wrong after the doctor operated on her tongue instead of her sixth hand. The mistake was noticed after the girl’s family members noticed that cotton was stuffed in her mouth after the operation.

State government forced to intervene

Angry over the mistake, the family members created a ruckus at the hospital, forcing the state government to intervene and take action. Soon after, it ordered the suspension of Associate Professor Dr. Bejohn Johnson pending the completion of an investigation. The decision to suspend her was announced by Health Minister Veena George after she received the report from the Director of Medical Education, who was asked to look into the matter earlier.

According to an official statement, the minister also asked the hospital administration to conduct the detailed investigation into the matter and take further action. She also asked the hospital to follow the protocol properly.

Meanwhile, the police have also registered a case against the accused doctor after the girl’s family lodged a complaint. The doctor has been charged under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including Sections 336 (endangering the life or personal safety of others) and 337 (hurt by doing an act endangering the life or personal safety of others).

Pointing out that the child had no problem with her tongue, the girl’s family member said, “No one should go through such an experience again at the Medical College Hospital,” according to news agency PTI. They added that the hospital authorities must take responsibility if the child faces adverse consequences due to wrong operation. “The hospital management told us that it was a mistake as they had scheduled the surgery for two children on the same day,” they said. A family member said the doctor apologized to the family for the mistake.
